Aeromedical Factors

Aeromedical factors are the physiological conditions that degrade a pilot's performance in flight — hypoxia, hyperventilation, middle ear and sinus problems, spatial disorientation, motion sickness, carbon monoxide poisoning, stress, fatigue, dehydration, hypothermia, optical illusions and dissolved nitrogen after scuba diving.

The FAA sets these out in one place. The Human Factors Task in the private pilot ACS requires the applicant to demonstrate understanding of the symptoms, recognition, causes, effects and corrective actions associated with aeromedical and physiological issues, and then names them: hypoxia, hyperventilation, middle ear and sinus problems, spatial disorientation, motion sickness, carbon monoxide poisoning, stress, fatigue, dehydration and nutrition, hypothermia, optical illusions, and dissolved nitrogen in the bloodstream after scuba dives. The same Task carries the regulations on the use of alcohol and drugs, the effects of alcohol, drugs and over-the-counter medications, and aeronautical decision-making using crew or single-pilot resource management. The risk-management elements add hazardous attitudes and the combination of distractions, task prioritisation, loss of situational awareness and disorientation. The commercial ACS repeats the same structure, which is a deliberate signal that this is knowledge a pilot is expected to keep current, not clear once.

The four-word framing — symptoms, recognition, causes, effects and corrective actions — is what makes the list teachable. A pilot does not need to be able to lecture on the pathophysiology of hypoxia; they need to recognise it in themselves early enough to act, and they need to know what the action is. That distinction is why several of these conditions are demonstrated rather than described where a school can safely do so, and why altitude chamber or reduced-oxygen training remains popular even though no rule requires it for a private licence.

Medical fitness sits alongside this but is a separate matter. Aeromedical factors are about what happens to a healthy pilot in the flight environment; the medical certificate is about whether the pilot is fit to be there at all.

Why It Matters for Flight Schools

For a flight school, the aeromedical block is disproportionately valuable per hour of ground instruction, because it is the only part of the syllabus that teaches a student to assess themselves. Fatigue and dehydration in particular affect student performance during training itself, which gives an instructor a live example on almost any long summer day: a student flying badly at the end of a hot third circuit session is a better aeromedical lesson than any slide.

The scheduling connection is real. Schools that schedule students into long consecutive blocks, or that let a student fly a lesson after a full working day, are running against the material they teach. Some schools set an internal duty limit for students as well as instructors for exactly this reason.
