Lazy Eights

A lazy eight is a symmetrical FAA commercial maneuver made of two opposing 180-degree climbing and descending turns, with pitch, bank and airspeed changing continuously and never held constant.

Definition

The lazy eight is the only maneuver in the FAA commercial standard in which nothing is ever stabilised. FAA-S-ACS-7 describes it as a constant change of pitch and roll rate and airspeed, with a bank of approximately 30 degrees at the steepest point, flown as symmetrical loops. The airplane climbs and turns away from a reference point, reaches maximum pitch-up around the 45-degree point, passes through the 90-degree point at maximum bank and minimum airspeed, then descends and rolls out onto the reciprocal heading before repeating the pattern in the opposite direction.

The graded tolerances apply at the 180-degree point of each loop rather than continuously: altitude within plus or minus 100 feet of entry altitude, airspeed within plus or minus 10 knots of entry airspeed, and heading within plus or minus 10 degrees. Coordinated flight has to be maintained throughout, and as with the other commercial performance maneuvers the ACS requires an altitude that keeps the maneuver no lower than 1,500 feet AGL.
