Commercial Performance Maneuvers

Commercial performance maneuvers are the set of precision airwork tasks the FAA requires for a commercial pilot certificate — chandelles, lazy eights, steep spirals, eights on pylons, steep turns and the power-off 180 accuracy landing.

In the FAA system, Area of Operation V of FAA-S-ACS-7 groups performance and ground reference maneuverssteep turns, steep spiral, chandelles, lazy eights and eights on pylons — and Area of Operation IV adds the power-off 180 accuracy approach and landing. Taken together they form what schools generally call the commercial maneuvers. The common thread is precision under changing energy: each one asks the pilot to arrive at a defined state at a defined moment, rather than to hold a steady condition.

That set is not a universal definition of commercial handling skill. Transport Canada's commercial pilot flight test guide, TP 13462E, contains no chandelle, lazy eight, eights-on-pylons, steep spiral or power-off 180 item at all, though it does assess steep turns, spirals and slow flight. Under EASA the CPL(A) skill test is set out in Appendix 4 to Part-FCL, whose content sections cover pre-flight, control of the aeroplane by external visual reference, flight at critically low airspeeds including stall recognition and recovery, turns including steep turns at 45 degrees, and flight at critically high airspeeds including recovery from spiral dives — again with no chandelle or pylon equivalent.

The underlying competencies overlap heavily; the named exercises do not.

A syllabus built around the FAA commercial maneuvers does not map cleanly onto a Transport Canada or EASA commercial course, and an instructor who has only taught one system can wrongly assume the other assesses the same items under different names.

If chandelles and lazy eights are recorded as generic advanced handling rather than as FAA-specific tasks, a later audit or credit assessment cannot easily tell which regulator's standard the student was actually graded against.
