Aircraft Availability

Aircraft availability is the share of scheduled operating time an aircraft is airworthy and free of any hold — maintenance, an open squawk, or a documentation lapse — that would prevent it from being offered to the schedule.

Aircraft availability is calculated as (total scheduled operating time in a period minus time the aircraft was grounded or held) divided by total scheduled operating time, expressed as a percentage. If an aircraft is scheduled to be operable for 300 hours of calendar time in a month and is grounded for 36 of those hours — awaiting a part, sitting through a scheduled inspection, or held on an open squawk — its availability for the month is (300 − 36) ÷ 300, or 88 percent.

What separates availability from the metrics it is most often confused with is timing. Availability is measured against calendar or scheduled operating time, not against demand: an aircraft can be 100 percent available and still fly very few hours if nobody books it, which is a demand or scheduling problem, not an availability one. Utilization measures the opposite gap — hours actually flown against hours available — and is capped by availability rather than a substitute for it: an aircraft cannot be utilized above the ceiling its availability sets. Dispatch reliability is closer still but answers a different question at a different moment: availability is the state of the aircraft going into the schedule, while dispatch reliability is the outcome — the share of already-scheduled flights that actually departed. Low availability drives low dispatch reliability, but the two are not identical; an aircraft can be fully available and still miss a dispatch to a double-booking error that has nothing to do with its airworthiness.

The holds that reduce availability fall into a small number of recurring categories. Scheduled maintenance — the 100-hour and annual inspections, and any component or life-limited part reaching its interval — is predictable and, done well, plannable around demand rather than discovered against it. Unscheduled maintenance, an open squawk found on preflight or reported by a pilot, is not predictable and is the category that most often catches a school unprepared, because it removes an aircraft from the schedule with no notice. Parts availability compounds unscheduled holds: an aircraft grounded on a defect stays grounded for as long as the part takes to arrive, regardless of how quickly the labor itself would take. And a lapsed document — an expired airworthiness review, a missing release-to-service entry — can hold an aircraft exactly as effectively as a mechanical fault, even though nothing is physically wrong with it.

Because availability sets the ceiling that utilization and dispatch reliability both operate under, it is the metric to examine first when either of those numbers falls. A fleet with strong booking demand and disciplined scheduling can still show weak utilization and weak dispatch reliability if the underlying availability was never there to begin with — in which case the fix is in the hangar and the parts room, not in the scheduling software.
