The aircraft rental rate is the hourly fee a flight school charges students or renters for use of its aircraft. It is one of the largest cost components of flight training and a primary revenue driver for flight schools. Rental rates vary significantly based on aircraft type, location, and market conditions — a Cessna 172 might rent for $140–$200 per hour at a midwestern US school but $220–$300 per hour in coastal metropolitan areas. Rental rates are typically quoted in one of two ways. A wet rate includes the cost of fuel in the hourly price, simplifying billing for the student but requiring the school to absorb fuel price fluctuations. A dry rate excludes fuel, meaning the student pays the base aircraft rate plus actual fuel consumed — this shifts fuel cost risk to the student but can complicate invoicing. Most flight schools in the United States use wet rates for simplicity, while dry rates are more common in certain international markets.
