In aviation training, an endorsement is a formal written authorization from a certificated flight instructor (CFI) that certifies a student pilot has received the required training and demonstrated the proficiency needed to exercise a specific privilege. Endorsements are required by 14 CFR Part 61 for multiple milestones in a pilot's training, including initial solo flight, solo cross-country flight, solo flight at specific airports, and eligibility to take the FAA knowledge test and practical test (checkride). Each endorsement has specific regulatory language that the instructor must include, and the Advisory Circular AC 61-65 provides the recommended endorsement formats. The instructor bears significant responsibility with each endorsement.
