Practical Test (Checkride)

A practical test is the regulator-mandated flight examination that an applicant must pass to be issued a pilot certificate, rating, or instructor authorization — known colloquially in the United States as a "checkride."

A practical test is the in-aircraft examination that determines whether a candidate meets the standard required for a pilot certificate or rating. In the FAA system, practical tests are conducted against the Airman Certification Standards (ACS) by either an FAA inspector or, far more commonly, a Designated Pilot Examiner (DPE). In the EASA system, the equivalent examination is the Skill Test, conducted by a Flight Examiner (FE) against the standards in Part-FCL.

A practical test has two phases: an oral component, in which the examiner probes the applicant's knowledge of regulations, aircraft systems, weather, performance planning, and decision-making; and a flight component, in which the applicant demonstrates each maneuver, procedure, and emergency in the test standard to specified tolerances. Failing any task — known as a "notice of disapproval" — does not require retesting the entire syllabus, but the candidate must obtain remedial instruction and a new endorsement before retesting the deficient area.

For flight schools, the pass rate on practical tests is one of the most important quality signals available. Persistent first-attempt failures on the same task across multiple students point to an instruction gap; persistent failures with one specific instructor point to an individual coaching problem. Schools that don't track this systematically lose visibility into the single number that most directly reflects training quality.

Why It Matters for Flight Schools

Practical test scheduling is its own logistical challenge. DPEs are independent contractors with limited availability; in busy regions, the wait between recommendation and checkride can stretch to weeks, blocking student progression and stretching operating capital. Cancellations — for weather, examiner illness, aircraft squawks, or last-minute student withdrawal — cascade through DPE schedules and can push retests further into the future.

The deeper challenge is recommendation discipline. An instructor who recommends students before they are ready inflates the school's first-attempt failure rate, damages the relationship with local DPEs (who remember which schools send unprepared candidates), and discourages students through demoralizing failures. A culture of disciplined, data-backed recommendations is the difference between an 85%+ first-attempt pass rate and a struggling program.
