Pilot in Command (PIC) is a regulatory and legal designation defined under both 14 CFR §1.1 (FAA) and EASA Part-FCL. The PIC holds final authority for every operational decision on the flight — preflight planning, aircraft acceptance, the go/no-go decision, in-flight diversions, fuel management, and any deviation from a clearance. The designation is independent of who is physically flying: the PIC may delegate manipulation of the controls to a co-pilot or student while retaining command authority.
Logging PIC time follows specific regulatory rules that differ between FAA and EASA. Under FAA §61.51, a pilot may log PIC time when they are the sole manipulator of the controls of an aircraft for which they are rated, when they are the sole occupant, or when they are acting as PIC of an aircraft requiring more than one pilot. For commercial career progression, total PIC time is one of the most heavily scrutinized columns in a pilot's logbook.
